Both Mead children, 3-year-old Claudia and 6-year-old Alex, were born with a rare form of anemia. Both kids needed a blood transfusion when they were only hours old. Alex received blood transfusions until he was 5½ and Claudia continues to receive a blood transfusion every three weeks. Between the two of them, they have received 110 transfusions in their young lives.
The children are thriving today because of the generosity of blood donors. "We are forever grateful to the people who have the heart to donate blood," their mom Rebeca said. "Blood donors give a piece of themselves and that is a priceless gift for families like us."
